Running your display at full brightness ages it faster: here's the research
LED backlights don't fail suddenly. They fade: losing brightness year by year, and drifting in color as the blue emitters age faster than the red and green. How fast that happens is not fixed: it's driven overwhelmingly by drive current and heat, which is to say, by your brightness setting.
What the lifetime data says
The industry measures LED aging under the LM-80 standard, expressed as L70, the hours until output permanently drops to 70%. Backlights driven hard typically rate around 40,000–60,000 hours to L70, while gently driven ones reach 50,000–100,000. That is roughly a doubling of life from running cooler. It's why commercial LED installers deliberately run panels at 60–70% of maximum.
The best real-world experiment agrees: RTINGS ran 102 TVs at maximum brightness for nearly three years, a simulated decade of use. Panels permanently lost 20–50% of their brightness, roughly a third developed visible uniformity problems, and twenty died outright, with heat plus maximum brightness identified as the primary driver.
Color accuracy goes first
Long before a panel looks "dim," its white point drifts as the emitters age unevenly. It is the reason professional workflows recalibrate monthly and calibrators target just 100–120 cd/m², a fraction of maximum. If you edit photos or grade video, aging shows up in your work before it shows up as brightness.
The practical takeaway
- Let the backlight rest around 75% or below for daily work. Perceived brightness is logarithmic, so the visual cost is small while the aging math improves steeply.
- Match the backlight to the room; reach for flicker-free software dimming instead of the backlight's extremes at night.
